As the reader will observe, I will use various names interchangeably to refer to the author of these texts: Pseudo-Dionysius [the Areopagite], Dionysius the Pseudo-Areopagite, Dionysius, and Denys. I do so while abstaining from responding to concerns over the possible pejorative connotations that the moniker “pseudo” seems to evoke with some students of Dionysius’s work. I have no stake in the matter and hope to avoid such questions.

In addition to the philosophical influence of Proclus, it seems likely that Denys was also heavily, theologically influenced by—among others—the work of one or more of the Cappadocian theologians: for example, Gregory of Nyssa.
